Trab-Arena Bahrenfeld, Hamburg

Can anyone advise me of where would be the best place to stay in July?

I will visiting Hamburg in July for The Robble Williams concert at the Trab-Arena at Bahrenfeld. We want to stay with in the distance of the Arena , but also want to be able to visit Hamburg city centre, without being miles away. Can anyone recommend an ideal Hotel/location to stay?

Bahrenfeld is not exactly a great district to stay. There is a Novotel near the arena but I%26#39;m not sure what else is in the vicinity. Better stay in the centre and travel out to the arena. There are no S-bahn stations really close to the Trab but there are bus routes and there will probably be a shuttle service from Stellingen and Othmarschen S-Bahn stations. HVV transport will be included in your concert ticket - look at www.hvv.de for more info. Taxi is another option but the place will be mobbed before and after!

In Hamburg there are many hotels near the centre to suit all budgets. Look at the links on this page. Alsterhof, Marriott, Dorint Sofitel, Hamburg Hafen and Ibis are all recommended.

I agree with HamburgerMan that it would be best to stay in the city centre and to drive out to the Arena by S-Bahn and bus (about 20 minutes from the main staion).

What a cracking weekend to have! .........Not only to see Robbie Williams, BUT there was also a Harley-Davidson Bikers weekend on too. From 14-15 July, 50.000 Bikers decend on the city...What a great atmosphere there was. Down past St Michaels they congregated on the Sunday, evey kind of Harley, Sports, Chopped bikes etc, could be seen. Along with sooooo many Beer tents...Food and general feastival stands.The weather was scorching and the men where hot too. (Sorry I have a *thing for Hot Bikers..heehee) . The Night life was excellent, Yes went to the Reeperbahn...had to just to say that I had been. Other Bars packed out , there just seem to be thousands of people out on Friday night the atmosphere was bouncing.

As for accommodation I would reccommend MotelOne- Hamburg-Altona on Kieler Strasse 171. 22525 Hamburg...there was a Bus stop out-side our hotel to get into town and a Train station about 10-15 minute walk away (We mastered the trains and bus route as if we were locals) from the hotel which was very modern and simple in design and very clean with pleanty of hot water and towels. €60 per night for a Double room or €45 for a single!.. also has a Bar and small Restaurant. The staff are very friendly and all spoke English.. so I did%26#39;nt have to embarrass myself with my poor knowledge of Germany.

Over-all found Hamburg to be a great city to visit, so much to see, and do and hopefully will be going there again Nov-December.

Day Trips from Munich

Any suggestions for day trips (by car) from Munich (our base for about a week)?

Based on ideas gleaned from this forum, we are planning to spend: one day exploring Chiemsee and Berchtesgaden;

one day exploring Garmisch and/or Mittenwald, with a possible quick drive-by of Neuschwanstein; and,

one day in Salzburg.

That leaves us with an extra day for one more all-day or half-day trip from Munich.

We would welcome any comments about our current plans, or suggestions regarding our extra day.

How about a trip to Regensburg (since last week listed as an UNESCO world heritage site). Fantastic old town, easy to spend a day there. From nearby Kelheim you can take a ship on the Donau to visit the very beautiful Kloster Weltenburg. You could also have a look at the picturesque small town of Kallmünz (35 km from Regensburg), which is also home of several artists and their galleries.

Nice half day / short trips could be Landsberg am Lech, Wasserburg (one of my favorites) or Freising (north of Munich).

or a tour to the mountaintop (if you do not intend to get up the Zugspitze near Garmisch) at the Wendelstein (cable car or mountain train start from Osterhofen and Brannenburg)

Hallo neighbor. Over here in the valley we are well above 100. Munich sounds pretty good right now.

The only thing I can add is that you will miss a great and inexpensive adventure by not taking the train to one of these places. The Bayern ticket is uniquely affordable. We took the train to Salzburg. So clean, comfortable, and efficient. Had hot chocolate and pastries on the way that we picked up at the Hauptbahnhof before we boarded. Bought the Salzburg Card when we arrived, one of those rare tourist things that is actually a good idea. Gets you free admission and a trip to the front of the queue at most of the big attractions. We saw the Mozart houses, the fortress, took the funicular, and several other things. Got on the train about 7:30 pm to return to Munich. A long, but glorious day. Quite a statement considering it was pouring freezing rain down on us all day.

For sure do the Crazy Ludwig castle. We took the train to Fussen, then followed the other touristas to catch the correct bus. Another amazing trip. Be sure and walk all the way up the hill to the castle. A bit brutal but a nice accomplishment.

We also did a day trip to Dachau, which is something that shouldn%26#39;t be missed. You can take the S-Bahn and then a bus to get there. We also went to Nürnberg and walked up the cobblestone hill to the old walled city. Wonderful.

Our daughter did a year of graduate work in Munich so if you have any other specific questions ask away.

Have a great time. We went the first week of December. Even more chilly than SF on a typical %26quot;summer day%26quot;.:) Munich is a great base. Clean, safe, and central. Enjoy.

Thanks for the great suggestions. I%26#39;ll add Regensberg to our itinerary, and see what else we can do.

Also, I was able to locate a copy of Earl Steinbicker%26#39;s %26quot;Daytrips Germany%26quot; - a terrific resource for daytrippers like us!

I have just returned from a week staying Prien on Cheimsee. Prien is a lovely little town, particularly when you go down to the lakeside. From there you can catch a boat, (Chiemsee Schifffahrt ) to the Islands - Herren Island with the fantastic castle and Frauen island. You can do a round trip on the boat to Seebruck and Chieming. Cheiming has a great view across the larger part of the lake and feels like you%26#39;re at the beach. In Prien there is a fabulous Pool called Prienavera, with an outdoor pool which looks out onto the lake and mountains, and across to the castle on Herren island. In Prien sit outside the Westachner restaurant for good food, beer and the best mountain views. I%26#39;m sure that a visit to Chiemsee can easily fill a whole day on it%26#39;s own, as can Berchtesgarten which is a good hour away from Chiemsee.

HI! We are scheduled to visit and tour the Porsche auto plant in/near Leipzig. Has anyone visited it? Is it worthwhile? What about the %26quot;taxi ride%26quot; on the test-track? Thanks in advance for response!

AlaskanMike, the Leipzig Porsche plant visit was very cool!

The plant is remarkable - they only assemble the beauties there (top ticket price of $500,000 for some of what we saw); the parts are manufactured elsewhere. If you are interest in manufacturing, as our friend with us was, it is a remarkable plant to tour. The tour guide was great; we four were alone for most of the tour. The lunch is fantastic - a first-rate meal. And best of all, the %26quot;taxi-drive%26quot; - which I highly advise you do BEFORE you eat! Imagine sitting in the front passenger seat with a highly trained test driver, doing 180+ mph around a test-track designed to replicate five of the world%26#39;s most notorious road turns. Outrageous! It was very cool. You wear a helmet and your glad you have it on! It isn%26#39;t cheap but it is worth it. Visit their website %26amp; then FAX with the program. By the way, Leipzig is a great city! We really enjoyed our three days there - stay in the Zentrum, the center. I hope you get to visit both Leipzig and the Porsche plant!

travel from Raunheim into romerberg

We are staying at the Mercure Wings hotel in Raunheim and have a day to explore the central area of Frankfurt; Romerberg etc. I understand to get into Frankfurt we will take S bahn 8 or 9 from Raunheim. Should we get off at Hauptwache stop and if so how far a walk is the romer area from here. Is there another stop that would be a bettter stop to get off at. Also there will be four of us, should we purchase single s bahn tickets or would a day pass or group pass be better. Is there any recommendation of things we should not miss to see in Frankfurt. Also is there just a main station in Raunheim that we would go to to get on the S bahn
