Breastfeeding Question

Does anyone here know what the general attitude towards breastfeeding in public or in restaurants is in Munich? Obviously, I try to be as discreet as possible with the baby well hidden under a large scarf but I wonder if the practice is frowned upon. I don%26#39;t have much of a choice since the baby can%26#39;t take a bottle but I would rather not have to feed him in a stinky bathroom.

Relax, it%26#39;s ok to breastfeed. I%26#39;d say people just don%26#39;t care, so just do what%26#39;s to be done and nobody will say anything and it won%26#39;t draw much attention. The local moms do it as well.

Sommerfest in Munich

I will be going to Munich in a couple of weeks and I would like to go to Sommerfest. Is it worth spending a lot of time there? Are there many beer tents? How long does it take to get to Olympic Park from the Munich city center?

Hi,

it%26#39;s nice there, they have 1 beer tent and some fun rides. On 10th and 17th of August they%26#39;ll have a firework starting at 10 p.m. There are also music bands playing in the Theatron (small open air arena at the lake in the park) for free each day, some of them are really good.

Munich main station or Marienplatz to Olympiapark is a 10 min train ride. From there about a 5-10 min walk to the festival. So just have a look, it won%26#39;t take you long to find out whether you like it or not. The Olympic park is worth a trip anyway.

World Equestrian Games

My girlfriend and I are staying in Valkenburg and will be attending the Dressage events at the WEG. My concern is travelling back to the hotel from Aachen after the Finals on Saturday night as public transportation doesn%26#39;t seem to run much past 10pm and the show will probably not be over until midnight.

Would a taxi be an alternative? Any other suggestions?

I%26#39;m sure our friend Dierdre will not let us leave until the very end that night.

It might be tight, but the five of us should fit for the trip home. We have a Passat wagon.

Castles Question

We are visiting Bavaria this summer and want to visit the castles.

I understand that you normally must wait a long time for a short tour.

Can you avoid the wait by purchasing the ticket before - does this really allow you to bypass the line?

Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau let you make reservations in advance--then you just show up at the appointed time and you%26#39;ll see your %26quot;number%26quot; come up on the sign. It%26#39;s not really that long of a wait--at least it wasn%26#39;t when we did it 2 summers ago. In my opinion, it%26#39;s worth the 4 hour line we waited in 20 years ago, but today%26#39;s tours are shorter and the line is much more efficient now.

For a small additional fee, you can purchase a reservation on the net. I highly recommend this. I recently purchased a 10:15 am ticket for Howenschwangau and 12:15pm for Neuschwanstein. The tours are fairly short but it will take some time to catch the bus up to Neuschwanstein. It%26#39;s a good 30 minute walk uphill if you don%26#39;t want to wait. If you don%26#39;t have a reservation, you may show up in the a.m and not be able to join a tour until late in the day. I%26#39;ve been there three times and making a reservation is the way to go. You can at least plan the rest of your day.

Have fun.

You can also stay in castles overnight (like a hotel). There are quite a few located all over. Try this link:

http://www.rhinecastles.com/

We planned 1 whole European vacation around staying in castles. Some are better than others (of course). Prices range from dirt cheap (Castel Veldenstein) to 5-star very expensive. I would highly recommend Veldenstein becase it%26#39;s located on a rail line...very close to Nuremberg. Also Castle Colmberg near Rothenberg is not quite as cheap (but still affordable) and a great place to stay.

Check the site www.hotel.de for German hotels.

I%26#39;ve used it several times and it seems to give good prices for hotels in Germany. If you find some in your price range, then check here for reviews.

There are quite a large number of reasonable hotels near the main rail station.

I booked the Hotel Merian last April and it was only 43 Euros for a single. It was a pleasant stay.

Need help/evaluation Munich/Fussen trip

Please critique this itinerary and help me to plan the best way. We are a party of three: 67 yr old Mother/Grandma; 42 yr old daughter; and 9 yr old granddaughter.

](day 1)Arrive Munich abt 2 PM plan to walk to Marienplatz and watch the 5PM show of the Glockenspiel.

Next day:(day 2) Get Bayern ticket and travel to Prien an Chiemsee to see the castle and just brouse around.

(day 3) Another Bayern/Lander ticket and go to Garmisch; take tram to Zugspitze

(day 4) Bayern ticket to Fuessen. spend 2 nights here. have tickets to Hohenschwangau for 4 pm the first day and Neuschwanstein the following morning. Thinking about renting bikes to bike around the lake etc. Is this doable? Also have tickets for Ludwig - the Musical for our second nite.

(day5) lv 8am, buy %26#39;regular%26#39; ticket to Buchloe - then Bayern ticket to Munich airport to catch 1PM flight to London.

Any suggestions/criticisms would be welcome.

I would vote to NOT stay in Fussen, but instead choose the little town of Horn which is closer to the castles than Fussen. It%26#39;s such a pleasant little town with lots of horses, cows, bike trails, etc. I can recommend the Hotel Helmerhof where we just spent 5 nights in June. Wonderful place. Horn is one of our favorite places in all of Bavaria.

All of your trips have chapters in Earl Steinbicker%26#39;s %26quot;Daytrips Germany%26quot;. It is, sadly, out of print but you might find a used copy on Amazon or at Powell%26#39;s Books (Google them for website info).

It has a walking tour of each location and restaurant suggestions in three price ranges. I%26#39;ve used his guides for almost 20 trips to Europe and he has never let me down.

I%26#39;ve never stayed in Fussen but I found it pleasant enough when I visited Neuschwanstein.

At Prien, you have a choice of taking the small (steam?) train to the lake or walking along the path that parallels the narrow gauge rail line. I found the walk easy and was able to pick up snacks and beverages from a store along the way.

Maybe Hohenschwangau is a better description. We stayed in the Hotel Mueller several years ago and the view from our balconey couldn%26#39;t have been better - Neuschwantstein on on side and Hohenschsangau on the other - with an Alpine lake just up the road about a block. It was truly a dream - which is why we want to spend two nights there. I s the Munich to Garmisch and Munich to Priem an Chiemsee a good plan? Or are we just doing too much traveling? Please help - I want this trip to be special for my daughter and granddaughter. My gr-grandparents came from Bavaria and I want them to appreciate what the area has to offer. Thanks again!!

rental car - navigation?

Spending nine days in few weeks traveling from Munich - Bavaria - Salzburg and back to Munich by rental car. I%26#39;m picking up/dropping off the car at Munich Airport. Anyone ever use a rental car company that will offer (and guarantee) me navigation in English? I just spent a week rolling around Bavaria in a BMW 730 with navigation system in German. I do not speak German but it really did not matter. Navigation really helped. As lond as it shows where I am at and which direction I am headed language made no difference to me. I actually prefer for the spelling on the road signs to match the map perfectly.

Le Meridian. The location is ideal, especially in winter. Right outside the front door of the hotel you take an escalator down. Then you walk under the street in a pedestrian tunnel, up another escalator and right into the train station. Also, the subway system leaves from the train station too. Read some of my other posts about the marvel that the Hauptbahnhof is. You can literally buy anything you need in the downstairs part, groceries, medicine, or clothing. The rooms are standards, but the bathroom has a separate shower, heated towel rack (good for drying clothes) and a clothes line that will stretch above the bathtub. Sign up the for the free Starwood Preferred program before you book the room, and you will likely be given a room that faces the internal courtyard rather than the street. Best of all, the nonsmoking rooms are on nonsmoking floors.

Places for US military veterans to stay

Hello,

We are looking for any information where we might be able to stay in the Nuremberg area. We were stationed in Ansbach in the mid 80s, and are coming back to relive the memories. We were wondering if there are still places on the kasernes, or close to one, where ex-military can stay at a discount price. We have stayed a few of these before in other places, but it was years ago. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Joe

It appears that kaserns in the area are being closed. I know that the hospital in Nuremberg , where I used to be stationed, is gone. Würzburg area facilities are also being phased out, or so I hear from a school teacher in the area.

You might check out this website for the overall picture but the news is not good.

Edelweisse Lodge in Garmisch is the only US facility that I can find in Germany. I know a woman that recently stayed at Ramstein Airbase but she was active duty at the time.

Good Luck,

Fischmarket - Do not miss out!!

After recently (January) spending a few days/nights in Hamburg, i feel i need to point out the Fischmarket and what fun it is. we arrived on the friday - four guys in late 20%26#39;s - we went to the usual reeperbahn - which was a challenge to find a bar that did not have something sexual (we honestly just wanted a beer!!) we found some in the end though. we were told about the fischmarket being a %26#39;good%26#39; place to go on a sunday morning %26#39;after%26#39; a few beers.

Nothing gets going until 11pm or so in the reeperbahn area so we went out at 12 on the saturday and kept steady drinking until 630am when we headed down to the fishmarket - now i have had some great times including celebrating the 4th July under the washington monument in DC and i have to say that the fischmarket was right up there with the best - absolutely freezing at the time, we wandered about following people that had beer in their hands, only to find a big barn looking place - inside was a central bar, sausage sellers on the right and fish sandwich sellers on the right and a 6 piece live music band at the end - surrounded by old fellas and families with shopping, that had been to bed on the saturday, we joined the revellers that had been up all night dancing to the music.

One of the strangest atmospheres i have ever had the pleasure to experience, this was absolutely fantastic and made my trip to hamburg incredible - I urge you not to miss out on this brilliant place!!

Hi Braizy. Found your post re Fishmarket really interesting. I%26#39;m going over with 25 lads for a stag do in two weeks. I can%26#39;t wait for it, but as best man and organiser I am a little worried about taking such a massive group over. Terrified that no place will let us in. We will definitely take the stag into a strip joint at some point but I share your views re: going out... We%26#39;re all in our twenties, decent lads, good looking (well, we%26#39;d all like to write our own reviews!), and we wanna meet some real german girls as well and have some proper banter.

If you can offer any more information, it%26#39;d be useful. Other things I%26#39;m looking at doing include a river cruise, tour of the AOL Stadium, Beatles tour, footy in the park, possible karting, - advice on any of these (from you or anyone else!) would be much appreciated. I want one night to be a crazy night probably in the reeperbahn, (We%26#39;ll be dressed as sailors) hopefully ending up in some cheesy nightclub, and the other night to be more refined - classy bars, good company etc.

Cheers

Don

I think I%26#39;ve responded to most of your points in the other thread but for a stadium tour you can look at www.hsv.de - the ground is being reinstated for the new season after the World Cup. Hamburg have to play a champions league qualifier at the end of July, the new Bundesliga season starts 12 August.

There are a few karting tracks

http://www.kartbahn-hamburg.de/ or

http://www.kart-o-mania-hamburg.de/ (but I think this has closed) or

http://www.mega-kart.de/

If you have car transport you can go to Ralf Schumacher%26#39;s kart and 10-pin bowling centre at Bispingen. http://www.rs-kartcenter.de/start_e.htm, about 45mins south of Hamburg on the Autobahn.

Re: Fischmarket - Do not miss out!!

Don,

25 people sounds like a good laugh!! For the strip bar i would suggest that you go to the Dolls House - it is pretty famous over there and ask anyone on the reeperbahn and they will direct you (its on a side street) The good thing about this strip bar is that it is well run and proffessional - i say this as i met a very unhappy irish lad that had the old story of going down the red light district part (it has a gate at either end) and getting told that the price had gone up after he had been in an establishment (this was not a strip club!!) and he was escorted to a cash point. Also he was in a strip club and 2 girls asked for a drink, he bought them a wine and a juice only to be given a bill for a 40 euro bottle of wine and a 5 euro juice.

In the dollls house you buy %26#39;dollars%26#39; that are then used to pay the girls for private dances and table dances and drinks so you can set your limits a bit better. - you know how genorous we can get when a half naked beauty asks for something!!

I dont know about karting etc but i think hamburger man helped you there.

As for the 25 getting in - i would just suggest you go in smaller groups to get into a bar then join up inside - also the fischmarket is a taxi ride away so arrancge cabs in advance and tell all your mates to meet in the bar area where the music is or else you could lose a few!! (I am assuming that your mates are as bad as mine at this stuff!!)

With the meeting the german ladies, I am sure that it wont matter that you are more likely to find one of each nationality throughout the world as it is very cosmopolitan there.

Finally there are a few 80%26#39;s bars on the reeperbahn playing very cheesy music and the best area i found for drinking was just off the reeperbahn (cant remember the name but it%26#39;s something platz) and is at one end of the red light gates that is spoke of earlier - hamburger man may help you there.

Have a cracking time mate and look after that Stag!!!

PS - Sailors????? Hope the strip bar was for the ladies!!??

Help from Local expert Please

Hello

My grandaughters will be flying to the US for a visit from Germany.....their mother wants to send american dollars with them for spending money......I am concerned they may be lost or stolen on the long trip over......are there such things as traveler%26#39;s checks available at German Banks that they could use instead......would appreciate any suggestions you may have......Thank you so much

Supply them with a VISA or Mastercard debit (ATM) card. Most German banks will issue them. They then can get dollars at any US ATM machine. If they get a card from a bank in Germany that is affiliated with a US bank (like City Bank) there is no or a very small ATM charge.That%26#39;s the way my German visitors usually handle their money transfers.

It is helpful if they have a small amount of dollars for their trip, best in small denominations in case they have to make a phone call, get a luggage cart at the airport, etc.

I agree that the best way is using a credit card and holding small §bills ready . I think in the US credit cards are even more common than in Germany - you can even pay small bills, isn%26#39;t it?

I use a debit card (VISA) from an online bank (ing-diba)

https:/…

With this card you can get money at all ATMs with the VISA sign.

Outside the EU they charge a surcharge of 2% on the bank withdrawal.

Sure, you can buy traveller checks, but - in my opinion - that%26#39;s to expensive and laborious.

Small $-bills are very helpful.

There is a special bank in Germany (Reisebank) where you easily can buy small $-bills and traveller checks. This bank operates on main train stations and airports. You don%26#39;t need a bank account there, transaction goes via cash or Maestro card.

Kassel and small children

We are bringing 2 daughters (3 and 6) to visit just after Christmas. I would love recommendations on where to stay and what to do.

Hi,

from some feedback from friends the Hotel Courtyard Kassel (marriott.com/property/propertypage/KSFCY) is a very good choice. It is behind the speed train station (ICE Bahnhof Wilhelmshoehe) and from the train station you can have good connections to different places in Kassel.

in Winter (after Christmas) you can perhaps still manage to pay a visit to the christmas market before it closes (if not mistaken a few days after Christmas?). The other places you can still visit are the usual places: musuems, orangerie, downtown, and Wilhelmshoehe Park. Although around this time the scenaries are different and limited as compared to spring/summer.

hope this helps.

Munich and Neuschwanstein advice

Hi there

My fiancee and I are making a trip to Munich/ Bavaria end of August/ beginning of September. We will be in Munich for 5 nights before heading down to Berchtesgaden for three nights, taking in Salzburg on the way.

A few questions:

1) What are the top tips for places to see and things to do in Munich for 5 days? Interested in things to do in the evenings.

2) recommendations on places to eat in Munich?

3) We fancied an afternoon/ evening just getting out of the city. Is the Starnberger See (with boat trip) worth a trip? anywhere else within easy reach for a 2 or 3 hour trip?

4) I have made an online reservation for a tour of Neuschwanstein for 11:40am on the Monday but am completely confused as to whether I will still encounter queues picking up my tickets and therefore how much time to leave. I know you have to be there an hour before. If we plan to arrive at Fuessen station at 9am will that give us enough time?

5) if anyone has any tips on visiting Salzburg and Berchtesgaden that would be great too!

Thanks everyone

Sorry no one with real knowledge has responded, so I will step up.:) Only been to Munich once just so you know. First, take one of the guided tours. They are kind of like the %26quot;hop on, hop off%26quot; ones in other cities, but you stay on. We found this to be really useful in scoping out the places in Munich we wanted to investigate further.

Time. The bus ride from the Fussen station to the Visitor%26#39;s Center at the castle is 15 minutes. The day we were there I walked right in and bought tickets on the spot with no queue. Be sure and walk all the way up. Tough but amazing.

Salzburg. Go after 9:00 am so you can qualify for the cheap Bayern ticket. We did Salzburg in one day. When you arrive at the station there is a booth selling the Salzburg Card. This is one place that is actually a good deal, as it gets you admission and a jump to the front of the line at most of major sites. We did the funicular up to the Fortress, both Mozart houses, etc and it was all covered by that card. If you are staying in Salzburg I think it is still a good deal because it goes for more than 24 hours. Check the Salzburg forum for a poster named %26quot;Roley%26quot;. She has impeccable insights about that city.

Check my other Munich posts about things to do there. We went to Dachau on the S-Bahn and a bus. That was a difficult, but unforgettable day. We were there in Dec. so we didn%26#39;t do Garmisch, but would if we went another time of year. We went to Nurnburg which is a quaint and memorable city. You can walk the cobblestones up to the old walled city. Reminded me of Prague, only it was clean and safe. (sorry Prague lovers)

In Munich. The churches of course. The Olympic park. We had lunch in the revolving restaurant at the top. If it is a clear day I highly recommend that. Go to a concert or the opera if you can. Even if you are not a classical fan, the Bavarian State Opera is a memorable experience.

Restaurants. We didn%26#39;t love most of the Bavarian food. Especially because most of it was served with an ample portion of cigarette smoke. Our favorite place was called Orlando%26#39;s. It is in the same area as the Hard Rock. They had a quite amazing buffet as well as excellent regular entrees. We also ate at the Hard Rock because we were craving a hamburger. Here is a tip. If the sausage is getting to you order from the vegetarian menu, especially anything with spaetzle. Had an amazing dish at the Rathaus restaurant with this German pasta and spinach. Alternatively, we didn%26#39;t have any bad turkey dishes. We have an amazing lunch at a cafe close to the Ludwig University, but I am sorry I don%26#39;t remember the name .Our waiter was Irish, speaking German, which is hard to forget.

You should have a wonderful trip with an itinerary like that. Hard to top for the honeymoon that%26#39;s for sure. Maybe you need to come to CA for that. We live close to SF, an amazing and most romantic location. (No. I don%26#39;t get bad for saying that.)

Ironically enough, we will be in London the first week of October having only been there once before. Really looking forward to it, and hoping it is a good time of year weather wise.

I just returned from Munich for the World Cup and was invited by a native to a wonderful %26quot;undiscovered%26quot; Italian restaurant, very romantic and excellent food (not so easy to find in Munich!). Dal Vecio, Newtonstrasse 13, 81679, phone 89-98-5152. It is in the %26quot;Embassy%26quot; neighborhood, one of the most exclusive and beautiful in Munich. Worth the trip!

Thanks both of you - all useful stuff. Yes We like our aerial views so the Olympic Tower sounds good.

I will happily pass on any tips on London!
