rental car - navigation?

Spending nine days in few weeks traveling from Munich - Bavaria - Salzburg and back to Munich by rental car. I%26#39;m picking up/dropping off the car at Munich Airport. Anyone ever use a rental car company that will offer (and guarantee) me navigation in English? I%26#39;m having trouble finding a company that offers it, or customer reps who know with any degree of certainty if they have it. Thanks.

Rented a car from Sixt earlier this month and had nav in English. Was VERY helpful on our trip! Check out esixt.com.

I just spent a week rolling around Bavaria in a BMW 730 with navigation system in German. I do not speak German but it really did not matter. Navigation really helped. As lond as it shows where I am at and which direction I am headed language made no difference to me. I actually prefer for the spelling on the road signs to match the map perfectly.

Virtually all Navigation systems are multi-lingual and they all support English. Just make sure that they give you the instruction booklet to change over to english. It%26#39;s dead easy

Virtually all Navigation systems are multi-lingual and they all support English. Just make sure that they give you the instruction booklet to change over to english. It%26#39;s dead easy

help me decide where to stay

my husband and i will be in munich over the new year%26#39;s

holiday for 5 days. we%26#39;ll probably do a couple of day trips via

train so i figured it would be nice to be near the rail station.

i%26#39;m considering either the eden hotel

wolff or le meridien. any strong recommendations?

My family and a group of friends, 20 in total. Stayed at the Hotel Ludwig, accross from the train station. I posted a review on trip advisors.

Le Meridian. The location is ideal, especially in winter. Right outside the front door of the hotel you take an escalator down. Then you walk under the street in a pedestrian tunnel, up another escalator and right into the train station. Also, the subway system leaves from the train station too. Read some of my other posts about the marvel that the Hauptbahnhof is. You can literally buy anything you need in the downstairs part, groceries, medicine, or clothing. The rooms are standards, but the bathroom has a separate shower, heated towel rack (good for drying clothes) and a clothes line that will stretch above the bathtub. Sign up the for the free Starwood Preferred program before you book the room, and you will likely be given a room that faces the internal courtyard rather than the street. Best of all, the nonsmoking rooms are on nonsmoking floors.

can we have a sticky for how to get from Schloenfeld Airport to central Berlin?

there are lots of posts and i think it would save time if we just had one thread with useful links for train times etc. so the forum didnt get too cluttered with repeated threads and people can find it easier.

Tegelberg Luge

Can anyone tell me more about the Tegelberg luge---how to get there from Munich, hours it is open, aprox. cost. We would like to go from the Neuschwanstein castle to the luge, then we are heading to Garmisch for a couple of nights. Any info would be greatley appreciated. Thanks.

it cost around 3 e a ride .hours are 9:00-18:00 .they also have paragliding in the area that i highly recomend..

Places for US military veterans to stay

Hello,

We are looking for any information where we might be able to stay in the Nuremberg area. We were stationed in Ansbach in the mid 80s, and are coming back to relive the memories. We were wondering if there are still places on the kasernes, or close to one, where ex-military can stay at a discount price. We have stayed a few of these before in other places, but it was years ago. Any help would be appreciated.

It appears that kaserns in the area are being closed. I know that the hospital in Nuremberg , where I used to be stationed, is gone. Würzburg area facilities are also being phased out, or so I hear from a school teacher in the area.

You might check out this website for the overall picture but the news is not good.

Edelweisse Lodge in Garmisch is the only US facility that I can find in Germany. I know a woman that recently stayed at Ramstein Airbase but she was active duty at the time.

katie25 , if you want to go down memory lane and visit Ansbach, the Best Western in Ansbach ( Hotel Am Drechselgarten) is a nice place to stay. Most military installations are now closed or taken over by the German Bundeswehr.

I have checked out on post housing on a lot of posts.It%26#39;s a hit or miss if they have room or not some are nice some are old. I%26#39;m retired mil. So I have several opptions I%26#39;m staying at eidelwiess. in oct. It is very cheap. But aveery nice Place. My ex commander took a R%26amp;R there a few month ago and said it was out standing.If you Can get to a Px or BX They have a book on all on post Quarters.It%26#39;s about nine or ten Dollars.

Fischmarket - Do not miss out!!

After recently (January) spending a few days/nights in Hamburg, i feel i need to point out the Fischmarket and what fun it is. we arrived on the friday - four guys in late 20%26#39;s - we went to the usual reeperbahn - which was a challenge to find a bar that did not have something sexual (we honestly just wanted a beer!!) we found some in the end though. we were told about the fischmarket being a %26#39;good%26#39; place to go on a sunday morning %26#39;after%26#39; a few beers.

Nothing gets going until 11pm or so in the reeperbahn area so we went out at 12 on the saturday and kept steady drinking until 630am when we headed down to the fishmarket - now i have had some great times including celebrating the 4th July under the washington monument in DC and i have to say that the fischmarket was right up there with the best - absolutely freezing at the time, we wandered about following people that had beer in their hands, only to find a big barn looking place - inside was a central bar, sausage sellers on the right and fish sandwich sellers on the right and a 6 piece live music band at the end - surrounded by old fellas and families with shopping, that had been to bed on the saturday, we joined the revellers that had been up all night dancing to the music.

One of the strangest atmospheres i have ever had the pleasure to experience, this was absolutely fantastic and made my trip to hamburg incredible - I urge you not to miss out on this brilliant place!!

Glad you enjoyed yourself. The Fischmarkt is something else! You are right to start late - many people come to Hamburg and start their evening too early which means they are too tired to enjoy it when it gets lively!

Hi Braizy. Found your post re Fishmarket really interesting. I%26#39;m going over with 25 lads for a stag do in two weeks. I can%26#39;t wait for it, but as best man and organiser I am a little worried about taking such a massive group over. Terrified that no place will let us in. We will definitely take the stag into a strip joint at some point but I share your views re: going out... We%26#39;re all in our twenties, decent lads, good looking (well, we%26#39;d all like to write our own reviews!), and we wanna meet some real german girls as well and have some proper banter.

If you can offer any more information, it%26#39;d be useful. Other things I%26#39;m looking at doing include a river cruise, tour of the AOL Stadium, Beatles tour, footy in the park, possible karting, - advice on any of these (from you or anyone else!) would be much appreciated. I want one night to be a crazy night probably in the reeperbahn, (We%26#39;ll be dressed as sailors) hopefully ending up in some cheesy nightclub, and the other night to be more refined - classy bars, good company etc.

I think I%26#39;ve responded to most of your points in the other thread but for a stadium tour you can look at www.hsv.de - the ground is being reinstated for the new season after the World Cup. Hamburg have to play a champions league qualifier at the end of July, the new Bundesliga season starts 12 August.

There are a few karting tracks

If you have car transport you can go to Ralf Schumacher%26#39;s kart and 10-pin bowling centre at Bispingen. http://www.rs-kartcenter.de/start_e.htm, about 45mins south of Hamburg on the Autobahn.

25 people sounds like a good laugh!! For the strip bar i would suggest that you go to the Dolls House - it is pretty famous over there and ask anyone on the reeperbahn and they will direct you (its on a side street) The good thing about this strip bar is that it is well run and proffessional - i say this as i met a very unhappy irish lad that had the old story of going down the red light district part (it has a gate at either end) and getting told that the price had gone up after he had been in an establishment (this was not a strip club!!) and he was escorted to a cash point. Also he was in a strip club and 2 girls asked for a drink, he bought them a wine and a juice only to be given a bill for a 40 euro bottle of wine and a 5 euro juice.

In the dollls house you buy %26#39;dollars%26#39; that are then used to pay the girls for private dances and table dances and drinks so you can set your limits a bit better. - you know how genorous we can get when a half naked beauty asks for something!!

I dont know about karting etc but i think hamburger man helped you there.

As for the 25 getting in - i would just suggest you go in smaller groups to get into a bar then join up inside - also the fischmarket is a taxi ride away so arrancge cabs in advance and tell all your mates to meet in the bar area where the music is or else you could lose a few!! (I am assuming that your mates are as bad as mine at this stuff!!)

With the meeting the german ladies, I am sure that it wont matter that you are more likely to find one of each nationality throughout the world as it is very cosmopolitan there.

Finally there are a few 80%26#39;s bars on the reeperbahn playing very cheesy music and the best area i found for drinking was just off the reeperbahn (cant remember the name but it%26#39;s something platz) and is at one end of the red light gates that is spoke of earlier - hamburger man may help you there.

Have a cracking time mate and look after that Stag!!!

PS - Sailors????? Hope the strip bar was for the ladies!!??

My grandaughters will be flying to the US for a visit from Germany.....their mother wants to send american dollars with them for spending money......I am concerned they may be lost or stolen on the long trip over......are there such things as traveler%26#39;s checks available at German Banks that they could use instead......would appreciate any suggestions you may have......Thank you so much

Supply them with a VISA or Mastercard debit (ATM) card. Most German banks will issue them. They then can get dollars at any US ATM machine. If they get a card from a bank in Germany that is affiliated with a US bank (like City Bank) there is no or a very small ATM charge.That%26#39;s the way my German visitors usually handle their money transfers.

It is helpful if they have a small amount of dollars for their trip, best in small denominations in case they have to make a phone call, get a luggage cart at the airport, etc.

I agree that the best way is using a credit card and holding small §bills ready . I think in the US credit cards are even more common than in Germany - you can even pay small bills, isn%26#39;t it?

With this card you can get money at all ATMs with the VISA sign.

Outside the EU they charge a surcharge of 2% on the bank withdrawal.

Sure, you can buy traveller checks, but - in my opinion - that%26#39;s to expensive and laborious.

Small $-bills are very helpful.

There is a special bank in Germany (Reisebank) where you easily can buy small $-bills and traveller checks. This bank operates on main train stations and airports. You don%26#39;t need a bank account there, transaction goes via cash or Maestro card.
